Lossless, Balanced, or Maximum: choosing a PDF compression level
The three modes do different kinds of work. Choosing the most aggressive option by default can damage useful detail without delivering a meaningful benefit.
Lossless preserves structure
Lossless asks the compression engine to optimize the PDF without intentionally lowering image quality. It is appropriate for text-led PDFs, exported office documents, and files whose links or structure matter.
A small reduction is a valid result when the source already uses efficient streams and embedded assets. Lossless cannot remove image detail because that would no longer be lossless.
Balanced is the practical starting point
Balanced may render pages and reduce image dimensions or quality. It is often suitable for scanned forms, reports, slides, and email attachments where the document must remain readable but exact internal structure is not required.
Because rendering can flatten interactive content, test form fields, selectable text, links, and accessibility after download.
Maximum prioritizes size
Maximum applies stronger image reduction. It is useful only when a strict upload limit matters more than fine image detail.
Inspect fine print, diagrams, photographs, stamps, and machine-readable codes at 100 percent zoom. If any essential element becomes unclear, return to Balanced or the original file.
